Mitigation

The detection of endangered species at a site rarely stops a project.  Instead, management agencies work with project managers to mitigate loss and potential risk to endangered species populations.   Management agencies often require project managers to relocate native biota beyond immediate construction impacts.  Daguna Consulting is versed in appropriate methods for such mitigation and subsequent monitoring.  We have experience developing site- and species-specific relocation and post-impact monitoring protocols for relocations.

We are using PIT (passive integrated transponder) tags to monitor survival of endangered mussel moved beyond construction impacts in the Clinch River.  In September 2019, we monitored status of those mussels seven years after relocation.  Our biologists used a submersable PIT tag reader to search the shoal.  Results from that sampling were used to populate survival models.
